Module 7: Final Animation
For the final animation project, the goal was to create a short animated sequence that applies the motion design techniques learned throughout the course. By researching animation examples and applying ideas from the reading, I developed a short logo sting that focuses on simple storytelling through motion, sound, and timing.
Reading
In Chapter 11 of Animated Storytelling, I learned that completing a film is only part of the process. Once a project is finished, creators must package and share their work professionally if they want to reach the right audience. The chapter explains that the animation industry is highly competitive, with thousands of submissions sent to film festivals and online platforms. Because of this, creators must carefully present their work with strong supporting materials.
Assets include:
Title logo
Film stills
Director’s bio
The chapter also notes the importance of building a network and strategically sharing work. Filmmakers can submit projects to festivals through platforms like FilmFreeway or upload them online through sites like Vimeo. In addition, creators should engage with online communities, support other artists, and slowly share their work to build interest. Overall, Blazer highlights that storytelling continues even after a film is finished, because creators must also tell the story of the project itself.
Research to Inform
The opening sequence of Monsters Inc. stood out because the door becomes the primary visual element. Throughout the animation, doors appear in different variations and move across the screen in playful ways. Quirky door knobs bounce, and creatures appear from opening doors, creating a light and energetic tone. I also liked how the sound effects emphasize each action.
In a logo animation compilation, one example that I particularly liked was the “Cansaas” logo. The animation begins with a click sequence, and the arrow movement feels smooth and intentional. Multiple cursor icons slideinto place, but it does not feel overwhelming. Instead, the motion supports the brand’s digital agency message and interaction theme.
The Apple advertisement announcing the Mac Neo was also interesting because the animation showcases product components through sleek transitions and high-tech motion effects. The visuals definitely communicate innovation and advanced technology. I do not note that some on-screen text helps clarify the product features.
Logo Stinger
Full Screen with Audio
For my final project, I created a short seven-second intro animation designed as a logo sting. After researching ideas and sketching concepts, I chose to create a fish tank logo animation. I first designed the visual elements in Illustrator, including the fish bowl, water, plants, rocks, and fish, then imported them into After Effects.
I animated the water using the Wave Warp effect and Position keyframes to create subtle waves as the tank fills. The rocks and plants appear one by one using Opacity keyframes. The fish moves up and down using Position keyframes with a curved motion path created using the Pen tool, so the movement feels more natural. The bubbles were animated similarly, but also included Scale keyframes to create more dynamic movement.
The conceptual brand name “LittleOcean Aquarium” appears at the end with adjusted type tracking and a fade effect. I also looped the fish and bubble movements so the animation continues. To complete the sequence, I added water sound effects that fade in at the start and bubble sounds during the bubble section of the animation.
Reflection
At the beginning of the Motion Across Media course, I only had basic knowledge of motion graphics techniques and animation tools. My previous work was mostly limited to simple animations using rigid keyframe techniques and static design, often resulting in glitchy or choppy motion.
Over the past seven weeks, I improved my skills in Adobe After Effects and Illustrator to create stop motions, UI interactions, and other motion graphics. I learned how effects and sound can work together to create more engaging visuals. I’m excited to apply these motion techniques to my graphic design work and incorporate animation into branding and digital content to create more dynamic design experiences.
