What Makes a Logo Memorable?

A logo is often the first thing people notice about a brand, and it plays a big role in how that brand is remembered. It’s more than just a visual mark—a strong logo doesn’t just look good. It communicates clearly, works across different media, and stays recognizable over time, making it a key part of branding.

The Core Three

Many designers and agencies point to key principles in logo design. Adobe, in “The Ultimate Logo Design Guide,” highlights several, but three general themes stand out as the most important.

Personality and Meaning

Memorable logos often carry meaning that connects back to the brand. Knowing who your brand is helps you design a logo that feels natural, clear, and easy to understand. When a logo reflects a brand’s identity or values, it’s easier for people to connect with and remember.

I’ve noticed that when I start a design with a clear concept or idea, the final result feels more focused. Without that meaning, it’s easy for a logo to look generic or misleading, even if it’s visually clean.

Simplicity Never Fails

One of the biggest factors in a good logo is simplicity. Simple logos are easier to recognize and recall because they don’t overwhelm the viewer. The Nike swoosh is a strong example. It’s just a single curved shape, but it’s instantly recognizable across different contexts. Frontify also notes the connection back to Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, reinforcing the brand’s message of athleticism and achievement.

From my own experience, simplicity is also one of the hardest things to achieve. When designing logos, it’s easy to keep adding elements to try to make something unique. In reality, that usually makes the design harder to understand. The strongest concepts I’ve worked on came from reducing ideas, not adding more.

Versatility Matters

A logo needs to work in different sizes, formats, and environments. This is where versatility becomes important. A strong logo should still be clear in black and white, scaled large for a billboard, or placed on different backgrounds. Apple’s logo demonstrates this well because of its minimal and adaptable form.

Testing designs across different sizes has been an underappreciated part of my process. A logo might look great on a large screen, but once it’s scaled down, small details can disappear. That’s usually a sign that the design is too complex and needs simplifying.

Motion and Branding

As branding continues to shift into digital spaces, motion has become more relevant in logo design. Many brands now use animated versions of their logos in apps, websites, and video content. According to Nielsen Norman Group, motion in design helps guide user attention and enhances the overall experience, making interactions feel more intuitive.

Motion is a great way to add personality and make a brand feel more dynamic. Even subtle animations—such as fades, rotations, or shape transitions—can make a logo more engaging without changing its core design.

A brand that demonstrates this is Netflix. Its logo remains simple and consistent, but when the app opens, it appears with a short, colorful animation and sound. The motion adds character and makes the experience more memorable. Over time, that animation becomes part of the brand identity.

Balancing creativity with clarity is challenging, and it’s easy to overcomplicate a design when trying to make it stand out. In most cases, simplifying the idea leads to something better.
